Democratic Party Member Ko Min-jung Resigns Amid Nominations Controversy: Analysis and Response

On the afternoon of the 27th, Ko Min-jung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, holds a press conference to resign from his position as a member of the Supreme Council in connection with the “nomination conflict” at the communications room of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul . 27.02.2024. On the 27th, deputy Go Min-jeong of the Democratic Party of Korea, pro-Moon Jae-in faction, resigned from the position of member of the Supreme Council, criticizing the ‘Sacheon controversy’ of the pro-Myung party (pro-Lee Jae -myung) leadership. It’s been a day since he failed to show up at the Supreme Committee meeting the previous day to protest against the leadership. Analysis suggests that Rep. Koh’s decision was influenced by the Party’s Strategic Nominations Committee’s decision (exclusion from nomination) of former presidential chief of staff Lim Jong-seok from Seoul Central and Seongdong Gap this morning.

MP Go held a press conference at the National Assembly Communications Center this afternoon and said: “Issues about equity are being raised, such as those regarding the bottom 20% and issues relating to public opinion polls . “The issue that ‘there is no general election strategy in sight’ is raised repeatedly even within our camp,” he said.

He said: “What I raised is that we should not just sit back and actively resolve the criticisms about the appointment conflict and lack of strategy that have emerged recently,” and added: “Even if the leadership takes responsibility for the current crisis and engages in intense discussions, there is mistrust.” “I thought we needed to eliminate it and end the current conflict,” he explained.

He continued: “I felt that the Supreme Council meeting would be meaningless if such discussions were not possible, and I hoped that a discussion table would be opened even now due to my raising the issue,” he said. The response I received was that I should resign from the Supreme Council.” “It was a public response from a prominent member of the Democratic Party, so I couldn’t help but listen carefully,” she said.

MP Goh said: “The leadership has an obligation to provide answers to political issues that cannot be resolved through the party’s constitution and rules, even if only through intense discussions. That is why the leadership has always been responsible for the election results,” he underlined. He added: “If the leadership of the Democratic Party even now seriously recognizes the current crisis and seeks a solution, it can be chosen by the people as a strong opposition party and a capable Democratic Party.”

Previously, MP Koh had raised questions about the controversy over the candidacy of his friend Kim Woo-young, Gangwon Provincial Party Chairman Kim Woo-young, and the delay in the nomination of former chief Lim Lim from his constituency (Eunpyeong – eul, Seoul) in a top-level closed-door meeting late at night on the 25th, but did not attend the top-level meeting on the 26th because the leadership did not accept it. Furthermore, on the 27th, when the party’s Strategic and Public Affairs Committee recommended former Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission Chairman Jeon Hyun-hee as the priority (strategic) candidate for Seoul Central-Seongdong-gap, where the ex-chief Lim had announced his intention to run, it seems he even resigned from his position as a member of the supreme committee in protest.
