Denmark Delays citizenship Vote Amid EU Presidency Duties

Updated June 17, 2025

Denmark’s parliament has ⁤suspended further votes on granting citizenship ⁣through naturalization for the remainder ⁣of ‍2025. the⁤ Office of Naturalisation announced that no additional citizenship bills will be⁣ presented this year.

This decision means that⁣ individuals meeting all requirements for ⁢Danish citizenship will have to wait until 2026 for parliamentary approval. The delay stems from parliament’s increased ⁣workload due to Denmark’s upcoming EU presidency.

The⁢ standard procedure for obtaining Danish citizenship ‍involves applying to the Immigration Ministry, which assesses eligibility. If the⁤ ministry approves the application, it proceeds to parliament for a vote.Typically, parliament votes on these bills twice annually,in April and October. However, the October 2025 vote has been ⁣canceled.

According to ⁤the Office of Naturalisation, only one bill concerning Danish citizenship via‍ naturalization will be tabled during the 2025-2026 parliamentary ⁢session. The bill is⁣ expected‍ in⁢ January ⁣2026 and, if⁣ passed, will take effect April 1, 2026. A parliamentary session runs ‍from October to June in non-election years.

The change suggests ⁢the January bill will replace the usual ‍April vote, resulting in ⁣votes in January and ⁤october of 2026. This leaves only one citizenship application bill⁣ for 2025,⁣ which was already addressed in April and ‍May. the current processing time for a Danish citizenship application is approximately 24 months.
