For two years, dental emergency consultations have been available at the Departmental Hospital Center in La Roche-sur-Yon. Two of the five service rooms are equipped for patients needing urgent dental care.

Each month, between 80 and 100 patients seek emergency ⁣treatment. Common issues include pulpitis, abscesses, and hemorrhages.‌ Here, we only treat ‍emergencies, says Anäelle ‍Lenormand, head of the Maxillo-Facial and Odontology Service. ⁣Emergency consultations are by appointment in the afternoon, scheduled in the morning.

The service was created to meet the enormous demand for patients‍ who were⁢ unable to find a dentist and is considered a vital resource.

The hospital has absorbed some of the pressure previously experienced by city dentists, requiring staff ‍to triage patients to identify genuine emergencies.

After two years, improvements are noticeable, particularly in the⁢ severity of ⁣cases. We have much less serious‌ emergencies like dental cellulitis, says⁤ Lenormand.

Experiment Planned for Later This Year

Lenormand notes that the emergency service does not solve the problem of⁤ lack⁢ of practitioners ‍in Vendée. She added,We ⁣take care of‌ emergency care, but afterwards, the patients are released.

In 2023, the department had 54.2 practitioners per 100,000 inhabitants, below the ‌national average of 68.13 dentists per 100,000 inhabitants. Lenormand believes the Vendée has the potential to have a dozen armchairs devoted to emergency ⁣consultations within the CHD. However, dentistry is expensive for ⁣hospitals and generates little revenue.

The‍ Regional Union of Health Professionals (URPS) Dental surgeons in Pays de la Loire plans‍ to transform their Sunday morning and holidays into a regulated‌ service to ⁣address the needs of patients.

Starting in June, a dentist will join ⁤the SAMU standard (15 and 116-117), similar to ⁢doctors. It is indeed he who will decide on the patient’s orientation⁤ to one ⁣of the ⁢guard firms, explains the URPS.

The Union, in conjunction with the Regional Health Agency and ‍the Council of the Order of Dental Surgeons of Vendée, plans to establish a system of response to the needs of non-programmed care in ‌Vendée. This will take⁣ the form of an experimentation that will start in⁢ the fourth quarter 2025 for a‍ period of one ⁣year, according to the URPS.

The terms will soon be ⁢communicated to the departmental surgeons in the department, then to the ⁣general public when it was set up, ⁢the‌ URPS stated.
