Bleeding gums during tooth brushing are a frequent occurrence that many individuals mistakenly attribute to brushing too hard or sustaining a minor wound, but persistent bleeding signals an underlying problem that requires professional dental evaluation, according to La Vanguardia.

Dentists Warn Against Normalizing Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are not something we should normalize, whether we are 30, 50 or 70 years old. warned dentist Eugenia Cervantes in an interview with La Vanguardia. Cervantes explained that periodontal disease primarily stems from the accumulation of bacterial biofilm coupled with the body’s inflammatory response. Additional risk factors that influence the development of gum disease include tobacco use, diabetes, genetics, and personal hygiene habits.

Oral surgeon and periodontist Simón Pardiñas concurred that individuals should not dismiss this symptom. Many people experience daily gum bleeding, and that’s not normal. It needs to be checked, because it could be a sign of gum inflammation or a more serious problem, such as periodontitis. Pardiñas stated to the newspaper.

Periodontal Disease Progression Without Pain

A major obstacle in diagnosing gum disease early is that conditions often advance without causing evident physical discomfort. Pardiñas described gingivitis as the initial phase characterized by inflammation and bleeding, which occurs without damaging the bone or the ligament surrounding the tooth. Periodontitis represents a severe progression where the disease damages the tissues supporting the teeth and can result in bone loss.

Pardiñas characterized the condition as a silent, slow, inflammatory, and chronic process driven by bacteria accumulating in dental plaque and tartar. While bleeding serves as a primary warning sign, other symptoms may accompany the disease, including persistent bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, and visible inflammation. Advanced stages can trigger gum recession, widened spaces between teeth, and tooth mobility.

Professional Diagnosis and Reversibility Differences

Dismissing recurring bleeding as a simple brush abrasion ignores the necessity of a professional examination. Pardiñas recommended visiting a dentist to determine the exact root cause of the bleeding through clinical evaluations, radiographs, and periodontal probing to assess the health of supporting tissues.

Early detection remains critical because gingivitis and periodontitis carry vastly different prognoses. Cervantes and Pardiñas noted that professional cleanings and improved home care can completely reverse gingivitis, whereas bone lost to periodontitis does not regenerate spontaneously, although treatments can successfully stabilize the disease.

Daily Hygiene Practices Recommended by Specialists

Dental specialists outlined five fundamental habits to maintain oral health and prevent inflammatory conditions:

  • Never skip nighttime brushing, as salivary flow decreases during sleep, reducing natural protection against bacteria.
  • Clean interdental spaces daily using dental floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque and food remnants unreachable by standard toothbrushes.
  • Avoid substituting brushing with mouthwash, as colutory rinses serve only as a complement rather than a replacement for mechanical cleaning.
  • Refrain from normalizing recurrent gum bleeding and instead schedule a dental appointment to rule out gingivitis or periodontitis.
  • Maintain periodic dental checkups rather than waiting for pain to manifest.
