HBOS New Series Launches with a Haunting Introduction
HBO premiered the opening credits sequence for its “IT: Welcome to Derry” series on November 1, 2023, alongside the show’s second episode on the HBO Max streaming service (now Max). The nearly two-minute animated sequence offers a chilling glimpse into the town’s dark past and foreshadows potential storylines for future seasons.
A Journey Through Derry’s Troubled past
The credits sequence begins with an idyllic depiction of the Maine town, gradually transitioning to reveal increasingly disturbing imagery and hints of the sinister entity at the heart of the story. Notably, the sequence includes visual references to past events within Derry’s lore, such as the bradley Gang shootout in the 1930s and the kitchener Ironworks explosion of 1908, suggesting these events will be explored further in the series.
The Creative Vision Behind the Sequence
Filmograph, the production studio responsible for the sequence, set the visuals to Patience and Prudence’s 1956 song “A Smile and A Ribbon,” a track thematically centered around concealing true feelings. Aaron Becker, a principal and director at Filmograph, explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the goal was to “take the literature [from King’s novel] and take vignettes that also exist in the world of the show and find a way to stitch them together.”
Becker further described the aesthetic as a collection of “tourist postcards that you would find in like the gift shop in a small town, which worked perfectly for Stephen King’s lexicon and Derry in particular.”

HBO has a long-standing reputation for creating elaborate and memorable opening credits sequences. “IT: Welcome to Derry” joins a prestigious list of shows known for their distinctive introductions, including “Game of Thrones,” “Carnivale,” “The Sopranos,” “True Detective,” “The Leftovers,” “The Last of Us,” “Deadwood,” “Sex and the City,” “Succession,” “Rome,” and “The white Lotus.”
