Designated Driver Association demands apology for ‘violence that labeled designated drivers as criminals’

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Gyeong-jun = Former full-time deputy speaker Lee Kyung, who was sentenced to a fine for retaliatory driving and was deemed ineligible as a candidate for the Democratic Party’s general election Corea announced on the 29th that he would visit the deputy driver at the time of the accident to prove his innocence.

Former deputy speaker Lee wrote on Facebook that day: “I am looking for a replacement driver. No matter how unfair and difficult it is, I will do my best until the end. From tomorrow I will start visiting all 9,700 replacement driver companies.”

Former Deputy Speaker Lee also hung a banner with this message on the main road in front of the National Assembly.

Former deputy speaker Lee was accused of suddenly braking several times in front of the other vehicle out of dissatisfaction when the car following him changed lanes, honked its horn and turned on its high beams while driving on a road in Yeongdeungpo- gu, Seoul around 10. pm on November 12, 2021. He was handed over to trial last year.

Former deputy speaker Lee claimed in court that the designated driver, not him, was driving the car at the time of the accident, but the court did not accept this.

The Democratic Party’s Central Party Verification Committee ruled that former deputy speaker Lee was ineligible to run in the general election due to his criminal record.

When former Deputy Speaker Lee’s position became known, the Korea Designated Drivers Association released a statement titled “Do not insult designated drivers who are socially disadvantaged” and said: “The unclear public criticism of designated drivers engaged in of retaliation are not acceptable to designated drivers.” He demanded an apology, saying: “You see that the articles have been judged criminal, so it is clear violence and violation of human rights.”
