Detained and Silenced: The Shocking Case of Ke Wenzhe, Where Speculation Trumps Justice in Jinghua City
Former Taipei Mayor Ke Wenzhe Detained Without Bail in Jinghua City Case
September 5, 2024
Former Taipei Mayor Ke Wenzhe was accused of profiteering and accepting bribes in the Jinghua City case. The Taipei District Court held a detention court on the afternoon of September 5 and ruled that Ke Wenzhe was detained without permission.
Ke Wenzhe was accused of profiteering, accepting bribes, and other crimes in the Jinghua City case. The Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office investigated the case and claimed that Ke Wenzhe was involved in a crime under the Corruption and Corruption Regulations. The suspicion of the crime was serious, and there was a risk of collusion and destruction of evidence.
The People’s Party issued a statement saying that the judge’s order made people guilty based on mere speculation, and that Ke Wenzhe was charged with “committing a crime involving profiteering”, which is a serious crime, posing a serious challenge to the rigor and fairness of the judiciary.
The People’s Party pointed out that the prosecutor’s grounds for the charge were insufficient, but exclusive reports and rumors from certain media were flying everywhere. The lack of openness in the investigation turned it into a laughing stock. Before Ke Wenzhe even entered the court, he was already cut to pieces by public opinion and sentenced to a severe death sentence.
The People’s Party also pointed out that the size of Jinghua City was decided by “consensus decision” by the Urban Planning Review Committee and was not decided by former mayor Ko Wenzhe alone. The Taipei Metropolitan Development Bureau also issued a press release in January this year, stating that Jinghua City’s change in the city’s floor area ratio complies with “appropriateness, public welfare, consideration, and legality.”
The People’s Party will unite and firmly support Ke Wenzhe, defending his innocence. The party calls on the judiciary to uphold the principles of justice and presumption of innocence, rather than being reduced to a political tool to convict people with conjecture and one-sided and biased evidence.
