Venezuela Accuses US and Opposition of “Narcoterrorism” Following Explosives Seizure

Venezuela’s Minister of Internal Relations, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, recently detailed investigations into alleged terrorist activities, directly implicating the United States government and opposition leaders in orchestrating violence through connections with drug trafficking organizations. The announcement follows the seizure of a significant cache of explosives and communication devices in caracas.
Explosives Discovery and Arrests
authorities discovered a bag containing explosive artifacts, analog phones, and 6 kilograms of TNT abandoned in Plaza Venezuela, a central location in Caracas. Cabello stated that several individuals connected to the abandoned materials, including the person who left the backpack near a subway station, have been arrested. These arrests are linked to a broader pattern of alleged destabilization efforts.
“Drug trafficking contacts criminal gangs to generate acts of horror,” Cabello declared during a press conference, reiterating accusations of external interference in Venezuelan affairs. He specifically pointed to the US government and certain opposition figures as directing these alleged operations. According to Cabello, intelligence agencies have obtained “reliable evidence” detailing planned terrorist activities orchestrated by what he termed “Narcoban,” a reference to individuals involved in both narcotics trafficking and terrorist plotting.
“Narcoban” and Alleged US Involvement
The Venezuelan government alleges a direct link between drug trafficking networks and the planning of violent acts within the country. Cabello claims these networks, dubbed “narcoban,” are actively recruited and directed by elements within the US government and extremist factions within the opposition. He asserts that these groups aim to destabilize the country through acts of terror.
The Minister emphasized that despite these alleged threats, the Venezuelan state, along with its security and defence agencies, is working “tirelessly to guarantee peace and security throughout the territory.” He sought to reassure the public, stating that citizens should be aware of the potential risks but confident in the government’s ability to protect them.
Significant Drug Seizures
Alongside the allegations of terrorist activity, cabello announced a significant crackdown on drug trafficking. Authorities have reportedly confiscated over 50 tons of drugs, targeting both trafficking bands and alleged conspirators. This operation is presented as a key component of the government’s broader effort to dismantle networks involved in both drug trafficking and potential acts of violence.
Looking Ahead
The accusations leveled by the Venezuelan government represent a significant escalation in rhetoric and raise concerns about regional stability. As investigations continue and further evidence is presented (or not), the situation demands careful monitoring. The interplay between accusations of foreign interference, domestic political tensions, and the ongoing fight against drug trafficking will likely remain a central theme in Venezuelan politics and international relations for the foreseeable future, requiring continued analysis and a nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics at play.
