Detroit Goes Digital: Pay Taxes with Crypto via PayPal
Detroit officials are working to restore the city’s reputation as a hub for technology and innovation.
Starting in mid-2025, Detroit residents will be able to pay taxes and utility bills using Bitcoin and Ethereum through a platform managed by PayPal. To mitigate cryptocurrency price volatility, payments made in cryptocurrency are converted to US dollars on the PayPal platform and then deposited into the city’s account. The program, announced by Detroit officials on Thursday, November 7, is part of a broader strategy to modernize city services and promote financial inclusion, especially for residents with limited access to traditional banking services.
“We are excited to be one of the first major U.S. cities to explore civic applications of blockchain,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
In addition to payment solutions, Detroit is recruiting blockchain innovators to come up with other applications to help solve city problems.
Blockchain technology has the potential to increase accessibility and efficiency,” said Justin Onbenu, Detroit’s director of entrepreneurship and economic opportunity, adding that Detroit aims to become a destination for forward-thinking entrepreneurs.
Detroit’s move follows similar initiatives in other states that allow payment for certain government services with cryptocurrency, including Colorado, Utah and Louisiana.
