For the tenth consecutive season, the Detroit Red Wings have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, prompting general manager Steve Yzerman to call for significant roster upgrades as the team enters a critical offseason.

Yzerman addressed the media following the conclusion of the 2025-26 NHL season, acknowledging the frustration felt by ownership and fans alike after another disappointing campaign that ended without postseason qualification.

“I spoke with [CEO Chris Ilitch] a few days ago,” Yzerman said. “He and the entire ownership, the Ilitch family, are very disappointed with the way the season played out. He continues to be extremely supportive of what we’re trying to do here. We intend to have further conversations about our team and about our organization in the very near future.”

The Red Wings finished the season with a record of 41 wins, 31 losses, and 10 overtime/shootout losses for 92 points, placing sixth in the Atlantic Division and tenth in the Eastern Conference. Despite being 34 points ahead of the Ottawa Senators on January 24, Detroit experienced a significant downturn in performance later in the season, allowing Ottawa to surge past them for the final Wild Card spot.

Yzerman acknowledged that even when the team was performing well early in the season, concerns remained about consistency and areas needing improvement. “Truthfully, throughout the course of the season…we had concerns. Todd and I talked about it…we, as a staff. We’re winning games. We see the deficiencies, the areas that we need to improve upon – that probably goes for every team. You’re never totally comfortable, regardless of where you’re at.”

The general manager emphasized the need to acquire better players to strengthen the roster, particularly at center, where the team has lacked depth, and quality. “We need better players, we need to make them harder, and also to improve the talent around them,” Yzerman stated, highlighting the organizational focus on upgrading both skill and competitiveness.

Despite the ongoing playoff drought, Yzerman expressed optimism about the team’s trajectory, pointing to signs of progress during the season. “I see progress,” he said, suggesting that while immediate results have been lacking, the foundation for future success is being laid through player development and organizational changes.

As the Red Wings prepare for the 2026-27 season, Yzerman confirmed that evaluating the roster and making necessary adjustments will be a priority. The front office is expected to engage in clear discussions with players about performance and expectations while exploring options to acquire new talent through free agency, trades, or the NHL Draft to address the team’s shortcomings.

The organization’s goal remains to end the decade-long playoff absence and return to contention in a highly competitive Atlantic Division, where sustained improvement and strategic roster moves will be essential to achieving long-term success.
