The Fire Marshal of Ishikawa Prefecture in Central Japan has reported a devastating outcome from the continuous heavy rains that have caused repeated floods and landslides in the Noto Peninsula, particularly in Wajima City.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the region has experienced heavy rain since September 21, with an accumulation of over 540 millimeters of rain in the last 72 hours. This is the heaviest rainfall recorded since the agency began collecting rainfall statistics in 1929.
The severe weather conditions have resulted in 6 fatalities and 8 people reported missing. Furthermore, over 100 areas in Ishikawa Prefecture are currently inaccessible due to the floods and landslides.
The city of Wajima has been severely affected, with roads blocked by earth slides and fallen trees. The water level of some rivers has risen significantly, with a cloudy and muddy appearance, almost overflowing the banks.
