Devastation and Recovery: The Aftermath of Typhoon Kanun

This is the Latest News

Despite it being the weekend, the recovery efforts in areas affected by Typhoon ‘Kanun’ have been ongoing at a busy pace. Gunwi-gun in Daegu, where the embankment collapsed, and the east coast of Gangwon-do, which was bombarded with heavy rain, are still struggling to bounce back from the devastation.

Recovering from the flood damage has proven to be a daunting task in all affected regions. Sadly, a man in his 60s who had gone missing two days ago was discovered dead in a reservoir today (12th).

Reporting from the scene is Kim Ji-hong.

The Devastation Unleashed

The river embankment had been completely destroyed, leaving no trace behind. The once flourishing orchard in the village has now turned into a bleak gravel field, washed away by the rain and wind brought by Typhoon Kanun. All 30,000 young apple trees have been swept away with the force of the flood.

According to Jo Eun-gil, a resident of Busan-myeon in Gunwi-gun, “Our fertile field has turned into the main course of the river. We don’t even know where to begin with the restoration process.”

Floodwaters breached the village in Gunwi-gun, turning it into a muddy wasteland. Muddy water still fills the barn, where cows were once raised, as well as the plastic greenhouse and main rooms of the houses. Restoring the village seems almost impossible, and even obtaining a single household item has become a challenge for the residents.

According to Lee Won, another resident of Gunwi-gun, “The embankment burst suddenly, and the rushing water flooded in so forcefully that we couldn’t even open our doors.”

Hurried Recovery Efforts

Heavy machinery continues to tirelessly move the piled soil into trucks without a moment’s rest. On the east coast of Gangwon, where a staggering 400mm of rain fell, public officials and volunteers are working tirelessly to restore houses, shops, and roads.

Even as the river water swelled due to the typhoon, the search for two residents who went missing during the heavy rains last month resumed in Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Lee Jong-man, the head of the on-site command team at Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters, stated, “Once the water levels subside next week, we plan to resume the search along the riverbanks and the Narip Falls section.”

A Tragic Ending

A man in his 60s, who had gone missing while riding an electric wheelchair in Dalseong-gun, Daegu, during Typhoon Kanun on the 10th, was tragically found dead two days later. His body was discovered in a reservoir located 1km away from the point where he went missing.
