Dia Bell Commits to Texas Football, Eyes Future as Quarterback
Updated June 22, 2025
Manhattan Beach, Calif. – Dia bell, a highly touted quarterback prospect in the 2026 recruiting cycle, has committed to Texas, marking a pivotal moment in his athletic career. Bell’s decision to focus on football, a journey that began during the COVID-19 pandemic, means putting basketball-the sport his father, Raja Bell, excelled in-on hold.
The younger Bell informed his father,a former NBA defensive standout,of his choice after an intense basketball workout in South Florida. “Basketball has always been one of my first loves, but (football) was kind of my path for me,” bell told CBS Sports. The shift came when pandemic restrictions limited access to basketball gyms.
Raja Bell, though initially surprised, respected his son’s commitment. “I was excited that he felt comfortable saying that to me,” Raja Bell said. “I was a little hurt that he was choosing the sport I thought he was realy good at, but simultaneously occurring, if this was his passion and if he was committed to it, then as a dad, that’s all you really want for him.”
As then, Bell has fully embraced football, earning the MVP title at the 2025 Elite 11, a prestigious showcase for the nation’s top high school quarterbacks. He is the first Texas commit in the event’s 26-year history to achieve this honor. According to 247Sports, Bell ranks as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 24 overall recruit.
Bell entered the Elite 11 as a favorite alongside other five-star recruits like Faizon Brandon (tennessee commit) and Keisean Henderson (Houston commit). His strong performance in the 7-on-7 portion propelled him to the top spot, surpassing Henderson in the final rankings.
Bell as Future Texas Quarterback
Bell’s commitment raises questions about the quarterback succession at Texas. Arch Manning, who committed to Texas three years ago, waited behind Quinn Ewers. With Ewers bypassing the 2024 NFL Draft, Manning is set to start this season. The expectation is that Manning might play two seasons before potentially entering the NFL Draft, opening the door for Bell to eventually take the reins.
The opportunity to learn from Manning and play under coach Steve Sarkisian, known for his offensive expertise, influenced Bell’s decision to commit to Texas. The Texas football program is hoping that Dia Bell, a five-star quarterback prospect, will be the next great Longhorns quarterback.
What’s next
Bell is expected to join the Texas Longhorns next year, where he will begin working toward potentially becoming the starting quarterback and continuing the program’s tradition of excellence at the position.
