Expert Analysis: Bulgaria’s Political Landscape Shifts
Public relations expert Diana Damyanova shares her insights on the current state of Bulgarian politics.
Despite low voter turnout, a higher-than-expected number of parties are poised to enter parliament. Damyanova challenges the conventional wisdom that only GERB and PP-DB can hold power, suggesting that two possible power centers will emerge: GERB and Peevsko DPS, along with new constructions. She also notes the growing cooperation between “We continue the change” and “Vazrazhdane.”
According to Damyanova, the DPS is the only party with relatively right-wing politics.
“The division in Bulgarian political life is pro and anti-European. Everything else is a mess, where GERB behaves more stable and reasonable,” Damyanova explained.
She criticized PP-DB for abandoning its core principles, including the fight against corruption, judicial system reform, and right-wing governance. “We were a right-wing party. We had three theses… We left the three,” Damyanova said.
Damyanova emphasizes the importance of long-term perspective in politics, citing the complexity of the field.
Peevski’s Strategic Move
“Peevski outdid them by textbook,” Damyanova noted, referring to Peevski’s successful maneuvering. ”The big peaks don’t go up on the run. Peevski outplayed them back textbook. They stood completely in submission.”
Damyanova believes that Peevski has established a strong base, making it difficult for others to remove him. She predicts that the fight for control of the DPS party will continue even after the elections.
