Spain’s‍ Second Deputy Prime Minister ⁤Yolanda Díaz is pushing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez​ to eliminate “aforamientos”—special‌ legal protections—for ‍public officeholders and to prevent companies implicated in corruption from bidding on government contracts. Díaz, who ⁣also ⁣serves ⁤as Minister ‍of Labor, wants these measures implemented following the Santos Cerdán affair.

Díaz has requested an⁣ urgent meeting of ​the two parties’ Pacts Monitoring Commission ‍to advance these democratic reforms. She characterized Sánchez’s recent ⁣explanation regarding the Cerdán case‍ as “insufficient.”

Specifically, Díaz is advocating for the complete elimination of ⁤aforamientos for all‍ public positions. She also seeks a permanent ⁢prohibition ⁤preventing‌ companies ‍convicted⁢ of ‌corruption from securing public contracts through revisions to public sector regulations.
