Díaz calls for end to aforamientos, corruption veto
Updated June 16, 2025
Spain’s Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz is pushing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to eliminate “aforamientos”—special legal protections—for public officeholders and to prevent companies implicated in corruption from bidding on government contracts. Díaz, who also serves as Minister of Labor, wants these measures implemented following the Santos Cerdán affair.
Díaz has requested an urgent meeting of the two parties’ Pacts Monitoring Commission to advance these democratic reforms. She characterized Sánchez’s recent explanation regarding the Cerdán case as “insufficient.”
Specifically, Díaz is advocating for the complete elimination of aforamientos for all public positions. She also seeks a permanent prohibition preventing companies convicted of corruption from securing public contracts through revisions to public sector regulations.
