Die Hard on the Small Screen: What Led to the Shocking Demise of Bruce Willis’ Iconic TV Series
Near the end of the show’s third season, the episode “I Wonder…” In “Maddie,” Caron finally answers the questions viewers have been asking since the premiere. As most expected, the crackling sexual attraction between Blue Moon Detective Agency partners Maddie Hayes and David Addison is masterful and accomplished (with The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” blasting in the background). It was a great episode that led to a predictable reckoning for both characters. Have this constantly bickering duo just made a terrible mistake?
This has left viewers asking new questions that aren’t appropriate for any series, no matter how smoothly everything seems to be going. Will the show even work anymore?
There was a logical answer to this question, but Charon was frustrated that he could not convey it. The transition should have been easy. From the beginning, “Moonlighting” was a nod to the William Powell and Myrna Loy film series based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel “The Thin Man,” so now David and Maddie could get married like Nick and Nora. As they solve the mystery, they continue to bicker.
Alas, life got in the way. For Shepherd, it was pregnancy. She was expecting twins, who were due to be born in the fourth season of the series. For Willis, it was a movie star.; He was paid $5 million to kill a terrorist in “Die Hard.” To Hollywood’s surprise, he did it.
The difficulties of Season 4 predated stardom for Willis. Because he was filming a movie, it was difficult to be with a pregnant Shepherd, so the show’s writers took the risky approach of sending his character on a separate adventure. This proved awkward and ultimately fatal to the series’ romantic comedy appeal. We watched ‘Moonlighting’ to see the two stars together.
As “Die Hard” blew up, Willis’ availability became more of an issue, causing production delays and ultimately cancellation after the show’s fifth season. Five seasons is good for any series, but the last two seasons (my favorite) have to be “The Thin Man,” and I hate that life has other plans for the principal. In any case, that Why ‘Moonlighting’ was cancelled.
