Diesel, which is more expensive than gasoline, to expand fuel tax cuts

◀ anchor ▶

These days, the price of gas is soaring that it is scary to go to a gas station.

In particular, the price of diesel is rising sharply, and even gas stations where diesel is more expensive than gasoline have appeared.

As the price of diesel rises, logistics costs rise, so there is concern about the impact on overall prices.

Reporter Yunmi Kim will tell you.

A gas station in Seoul.

Gasoline is 2,428 won per liter and diesel is 2,450 won per liter.

Diesel is 22 won more expensive.

Diesel has a low tax, so it is usually about 200 won cheaper than gasoline, but the price has been reversed.

Even on a national average basis, the gap has narrowed significantly.

A month ago, there was a difference of 184 won, but today it is only 81 won.

The surge in diesel prices is a global trend.

Diesel prices in the international market soared 64% in just two months.

That’s more than double the rise in gasoline prices over the same period.

Europe in particular is a problem.

About half of Europe, which has a lot of diesel vehicles, was imported from Russia, but anxiety is spreading in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s not our country that’s lacking. Because Europe doesn’t have enough inventory and imports aren’t enough…”

As the price of diesel rose, it was especially hard for truck drivers.

“I can’t stand it now. Transportation costs are the same and fuel consumption is high. Trucks do more.”

Still, prices are rising steeply, but if the logistics cost rises, it will inevitably intensify the inflation further.

The government is watching international oil prices and is considering increasing the fuel tax cut from the current 20% to 30%.
