Physician burnout remains a critical issue in healthcare, impacting both individual well-being and patient care. Recent research highlights two promising interventions: a digital programme focused on self-awareness and resilience, and the use of smartwatches to track physiological data and encourage well-being.
Digital Program Boosts Resilience and Reduces Burnout
A study conducted in Mexico and the United States demonstrated that a digital program designed to enhance self-awareness,resilience,and gratitude significantly improved physician well-being. Participants in the intervention group experienced improvements in burnout, personal accomplishment, and gratitude. Adverse event rates were low, at 0.05% in the intervention group and 0.04% in the control group.

Smartwatches Offer Individualized Approach to well-being
A study published in JAMA Network Open explored the potential of smartwatches to promote physician well-being. Researchers enrolled 184 physicians (average age 37.5 years, 58.8% female,with 45.4% being residents or fellows). Participants were randomized into two groups:
- Immediate Intervention: Received a Garmin Venu 2 Plus smartwatch with detailed instructions and bi-monthly newsletters aggregating device data, reminders, and feature facts.
- Delayed Intervention: Received nothing for six months, were surveyed, and then received a Garmin Venu 3S smartwatch with the same support as the immediate group.
The smartwatches tracked heart rate, physical activity, respiratory rate, stress levels, and sleep patterns.
While self-reported burnout-measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-was lower in the immediate intervention group at 6 months (41.2% vs. 50.5%; P = 0.21), the difference wasn’t statistically significant initially. However, after adjusting for baseline scores, demographics, specialty, and work hours, a significant reduction in burnout emerged (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.21-0.99; P = 0.046). Mean resilience scores, as measured by the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, were also significantly higher in the smartwatch group.
The study found no improvements in quality of life,depressive symptoms,stress,or sleepiness. Researchers suggest that smartwatches are a promising individual strategy to mitigate burnout and improve resilience,but should be combined with broader organizational efforts.
Further research is needed to determine if engagement with smartwatch data translates into behavioral changes, such as adaptive coping mechanisms and reflective habits.
The Importance of Engagement and Personalization
Hirshberg emphasized the potential of wearables but cautioned that identifying the most accurate physiological indicators of well-being and effectively communicating that information remains a challenge. He noted that delivering insights needs to be personalized to be effective, acknowledging the complexities of human emotion and psychological states.
Both studies highlighted the importance of participant buy-in. As participants volunteered for the studies, the results may not be generalizable to worldwide implementation within a healthcare system. Hirshberg stressed that engagement is crucial for success, and tailoring the experience to all individuals is vital if such initiatives are mandated.
