Granada Invests in Agri-Food Sector Through Cooperative Projects

The Diputación de Granada, in collaboration with the Association of Cooperatives of Granada, has initiated a series of projects designed to bolster the agri-food sector, foster rural development, combat depopulation, and encourage the consumption of high-quality products bearing guarantee stamps such as protected Geographical Indication (IGP) and Denomination of Protected Origin (DOP).
These initiatives, backed by the provincial institution and aligned with the FAECA strategy, aim to promote sustainability, competitiveness, and generational renewal within Granada’s agricultural landscape.The projects include:
- “Connecting the field”: Focused on promoting cooperativism.
- “Roots of flavour”: Highlighting the work of the PGI.
- “Taste of origin”: Disseminating the work of DOP.
- “Interprofessional in action”: Showcasing the efforts of interprofessional organizations.
Diputación de Granada’s Commitment
Antonio Díaz, deputy of European Funds, Development, Industry and Employment, emphasized the Diputación de Granada’s dedication to the “sustainable development of the agri -food sector” and to “the promotion of a cooperative model that benefits all the actors of the Granada field”.
Díaz stated that these projects “not only seek to strengthen the economy, but also preserve our cultural and environmental heritage”, adding that “it is essential that young people see in the field an prospect for the future and these initiatives are an important step in that direction.”
FAECA’s Perspective on Cooperativism
Gustavo Ródenas, director of FAECA-COOPERATIVA AGROALIMENTARAS DE GRANADA, highlighted that cooperativism “is a key tool for rural development and sustainability of the agri-food sector.” He explained that with these projects, “we want to show the advantages of belonging to a cooperative, from access to technology and training to better marketing conditions.”
Ródenas also expressed gratitude for the Diputación de Granada’s collaboration, noting the intention to educate the population about the importance of consuming local products with quality stamps, “that guarantee excellence and respect for the surroundings.”

‘Connecting the Field’
The Association of Cooperatives of Granada, supported by FAECA, is launching this campaign to promote the benefits of agricultural cooperativism as a rural development model. The project includes audiovisual materials, social media campaigns, and outreach events targeting young people. The goal is to encourage generational transition and demonstrate the advantages of cooperative membership, such as access to technology, training, and improved marketing opportunities.
‘Flavor Roots’
Spearheaded by Huétor Tájar’s asparagus producers, this project aims to raise awareness about the benefits of products with a protected geographical indication. Through educational content, visuals, and mini-explanatory videos, it seeks to enhance understanding of PGI and promote conscious consumption of local products that ensure quality, authenticity, and environmental duty.

The DOP Montes de Granada is leading this initiative to promote the advantages of products with a protected designation of origin. The campaign includes social media activities, the creation of explanatory videos, and collaborations with other DOPs and industry entities. The aim is to bring consumers closer to the importance of these quality seals and their impact on economic development and the preservation of local gastronomic traditions.
‘Interprofessional in Action’
Led by the interprofessional association of green asparagus from Spain, this project seeks to strengthen the green asparagus value chain, improve collaboration among sector stakeholders, and promote equal opportunities in rural areas.Through dissemination campaigns, informative materials, and social media, it aims to educate farmers, distributors, and consumers about the importance of working together to ensure a more competitive and sustainable model.
Extensive Study and Commitment
These four projects, funded by the Diputación de Granada, also incorporate a situational study based on surveys of farmers and professionals in the province’s agricultural sector. These initiatives reflect the commitment of cooperatives to the sustainable development of the agri-food sector and the promotion of quality products from the province.
