Director Vinayan Responds to Criticism Over State Film Awards for ’19th Century’

Controversy Surrounds State Film Awards as Director Vinayan Responds

In the aftermath of the state film awards announcement, social media has been buzzing with discussions and opinions. Many members of the audience expressed disappointment as some anticipated films failed to secure awards. One movie that has sparked considerable debate is Vinayan’s “19th Century,” which managed to win three awards. The accolades were given in the categories of Best Dubbing Artist (Shoby Thilakan), Music Director (M Jayachandran), and Singer (Mridula Warrier).

However, despite these wins, Director Vinayan has found himself responding to criticisms regarding the film’s omission from other important categories, such as art direction. The director reached out to book reviewer NE Sudheer on Facebook to address the issue.

NE Sudheer’s Facebook Post

NE Sudheer expressed his doubts about whether the film awards jury had even watched Vinayan’s “Pathomvatham Santhali.” In his post, Sudheer questioned why this production was seemingly overlooked in crucial categories, suggesting neglect across various aspects. Sudheer particularly highlighted the impressive technological excellence of “nineteenth century” and raised concerns about the exclusion of its exceptional art direction. Sudheer also questioned why the film was not evaluated for its social importance.

Director Vinayan is no stranger to criticism, and while he acknowledged the sentiments expressed, he emphasized that there is little point in complaining once an award has been presented by a jury. Vinayan admitted that he did not have high expectations and expressed gratitude for the three awards received. He also thanked the Chairman of the Ranjith Academy, further conveying his appreciation.

Controversy Unsettles Film Enthusiasts

The controversy surrounding the State Film Awards continues to unsettle moviegoers. Vinayan’s “19th Century,” a visually captivating tale of Velayudhapanikar’s forgotten place in the history of Kerala, struck a nerve with audiences who believed the film deserved greater recognition.

As discussions rage on social media, opinions remain divided. While some champion the movie’s achievements, others lament its supposed snub in significant award categories. Only time will tell if the controversy surrounding the state film awards will subside or further intensify, leaving a lasting impact on the film industry.

Every time the state film awards are announced, social media is the talk of the town. Part of the audience says that the films they expected did not get the awards. Like Roshak, Malikappuram and Thallumala, Vinayan’s 19th Century is a film that comes in such discussions. The film won three awards. The awards went to Best Dubbing Artist (Shoby Thilakan), Music Director (M Jayachandran) and Singer (Mridula Warrier). Director Vinayan has responded to comments that the film should have been considered for a number of other awards, including art direction. Vinayan replied to book reviewer NE Sudheer’s Facebook post.

NE Sudhir’s note was as follows

Didn’t our film awards jury see the movie ‘Pathomvatham Santhali’? This is the main doubt that came to mind while reading the state film award details in the morning newspaper. Directed by Vinayan, the film ‘Pathumbathaam Sandhalam’ did not seem to be considered in any important category. It seems to be neglected in most departments. The ‘nineteenth century’ was one of astonishing technological excellence. How could the art direction, which was full of excellence in that film, be ignored, even if he pretends he didn’t see anything else? Why was it not evaluated as a film of social importance? There are so many questions. A bit of a complete mess. Director Vinayan will not be new in this regard. He’s an artist who’s going to get used to all that. Even then, it will cause pain for moviegoers. The point is that even a film that beautifully narrated the story of a man named Velayudhapanikar who did not get his rightful place in the history of Kerala, his bad fate befell him.

Vinayan’s response to this is as follows- About my film Mr. Thank you for the kind words written by NE Sudheer… But after giving an award in front of a jury, there is no point in complaining.. The truth is that I didn’t even expect this much.. Weren’t three awards given..? I am indebted to the Chairman of the Ranjith Academy…
