L.A. has a diverse food scene but lacks halal options. Many residents travel to Orange County for halal cuisine. Halal involves dietary laws that Muslims follow, including avoiding pork and adhering to specific slaughter methods.

Recently, a group of halal food trucks has emerged near Echo Park and DTLA, attracting people through social media and word of mouth. The trucks gather at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, especially at 505 N. Figueroa St. Various cuisines from Kazakhstan, Palestine, Turkey, and more are available every night.

Era Grill (Central Asian Food):

Era Grill is a standout blue food truck that specializes in Central Asian dishes, mainly from Uzbekistan. The “plow,” similar to pilaf, features fluffy rice cooked with sweet carrots, tender lamb, and a fresh salad. The shourpa, a light meat and vegetable soup, is flavorful with cumin and sweet peppers. A large Libananyan shawarma wraps seasoned chicken, fries, onion, and tomatoes in garlic yogurt sauce, making it a hefty and delicious meal.

Turkish Halal Food (Turkish Kekap):

Cem Derin opened his Turkish Kekap stand only three weeks ago and is quickly growing a loyal customer base. Derin grills meat over mesquite charcoal in a traditional mangal. The serve is simple: succulent chicken wrapped in thin bread, complemented by a fresh onion and tomato salad. The blend of spices brings bold flavors to the dish.

Mrs. Knafeh (Palestinian Knafeh, Karak Tea, and Atayef):

Aya Khalil from Mrs. Knafeh offers popular Palestinian desserts year-round. Atayef, crescent-shaped pancakes filled with cream, walnuts, or dates, are deep-fried and drizzled with sugar syrup. Khalil’s knafeh features salty cheese topped with crispy phyllo dough and is a must-try. Guests can enjoy the treats with karak, a sweet, spiced tea.

Naryn Halal Food (Kazakhstan):

Naryn serves Kazakh cuisine, gaining recognition for its manti dumplings and beef samsa. Patrons describe the manti as flavorful and aromatic. The samsa, a pastry filled with tender ground beef, comes with a tangy tomato-based sauce that enhances the taste.

These food trucks enrich L.A.’s halal offerings, creating a vibrant food scene for local enthusiasts.
