Explore the power of water on Mars with ESA’s Mars Express. This flight showcases the Oxia Palus region, covering about 890,000 km², more than twice the size of Germany. The tour features Ares Vallis, one of Mars’s largest outflow channels, which stretches over 1700 km from the southern highlands to Chryse Planitia’s plains.

Billions of years ago, water flowed through Ares Vallis and other channels, shaping the landscape we observe today.

Our flight begins at the landing site of NASA’s Pathfinder mission. The Sojourner rover explored Ares Vallis for 12 weeks in 1997. As we proceed south, we pass over the Masursky and Sagan craters. The Masursky Crater shows signs of past water flow from Tiu Vallis.

The Masursky Crater contains jumbled blocks, leading us to Hydaspis Chaos, known for its chaotic terrain. This area appears mixed due to sudden water release from underground, causing the surface to collapse into blocks.

Next, we see the Galilaei crater, which likely once held a lake that overflowed. We also observe streamlined islands and terraced riverbanks, indicating past water flow direction.

Each second of the film consists of 50 frames, enriched with vertical exaggeration and atmospheric effects to enhance realism.

Interviewer: The Oxia Planum area is mentioned as the planned landing site for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover. Why is this region particularly suited for the mission?

Dr. Fischer: The Oxia Planum region is ideal for the ExoMars mission because it showcases extensive evidence of past water activity. This area’s geological features, shaped by ancient floods, may harbor signs of past life. Studying these features can give us critical insights into the conditions that might have supported life on Mars, making it a compelling target for exploration.
