Disney+ has launched a redesigned streaming app across South Africa alongside an aggressive new entry-level subscription tier priced at R49 per month, according to reporting published on September 9, 2026. The update effectively replaces the previous Mobile package with a much wider Basic plan, extending service availability to televisions, laptops, and computer monitors.

Disney+ Rolls Out Redesigned App and R49 Basic Tier in South Africa

The R49 Basic Tier Replaces the Discontinued Mobile Plan

The structural shift centers on the retirement of the older Mobile plan, based on customer communications reported by MyBroadband and BusinessTech. The legacy Mobile option restricted viewing strictly to smartphones and tablets. The new R49 Basic tier breaks that barrier, permitting usage on TVs, laptops, and computer monitors. Company notices cited in the reports confirm that existing Mobile subscribers will be migrated automatically to the Basic plan.

Technical Trade-Offs and Premium Tier Comparison

Substantial trade-offs accompany the lower monthly price point. The Basic tier limits users to a single concurrent stream and a maximum video resolution of 720p. Subscribers on the R49 plan also lose the ability to download content for offline viewing. That feature remains exclusive to the platform’s Premium tier, which continues to cost R179 per month, supports up to four concurrent streams, and delivers a maximum resolution of up to 4K with full download capabilities intact.

Competitive Pressure in the South African Streaming Market

The new R49 pricing structure positions Disney+ directly against rival low-cost streaming options available to South African consumers. Netflix offers a Basic plan priced at R99 per month that is similarly capped at 720p resolution and a single stream, according to industry reporting. Amazon Prime Video provides a local bundle priced at approximately R59 per month when combined with a Prime subscription.

Migration Uncertainties and Expanded App Features

Several operational details regarding the migration remain unconfirmed by the platform. Reporting notes that the company has not clarified whether existing Premium subscribers will be permitted to downgrade to the Basic tier. Nor has it detailed how watch histories and personalized recommendations will transfer during automatic migrations. Beyond pricing and device changes, the updated application introduces international travel usage, improved content recommendations, and an updated Junior Mode featuring revised parental controls.
