Michael Mann Recuts Miami Vice for World Premiere at Beyond Fest

Writer-director Michael Mann will premiere his newly edited 4K version of the 2006 action film Miami Vice at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on October 3, 2026, according to an announcement from the festival.

The screening of Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut will be followed by a live question-and-answer session featuring Mann. The festival’s scheduling page does not specify the runtime for this updated presentation, leaving open whether it matches the theatrical cut or subsequent home video releases.

According to historical production context, Mann’s feature adaptation of the television series suffered a notoriously troubled shoot in the Dominican Republic. Those difficulties culminated in lead actor Jamie Foxx, who played Detective Ricardo Tubbs opposite Colin Farrell’s Sonny Crockett, abruptly abandoning the production during filming and forcing a rewrite of the movie’s ending.

Evolution from Theatrical Release to Home Video

The upcoming premiere at Beyond Fest marks another revision to a film that has already undergone significant alterations since its initial theatrical run. In 2008, the Miami Vice Unrated Director’s Edition was released on Blu-ray, which incorporated deleted scenes, re-edited sequences, and alternate music cues.

That 2008 version adjusted the tone of the movie to align more closely with the 1980s television series, which Mann executive produced. Notable adjustments included an opening sequence swap that replaced the theatrical start with an offshore speedboat race set against the Miami skyline and scored with electronic music.

Despite opening at the top of the domestic box office in 2006, the original theatrical release proved to be a critical and commercial misfire. In the two decades following its debut, however, the project has garnered a dedicated cult following and undergone a significant critical reappraisal.

Future Plans for the Property

The Beyond Fest screening arrives as the franchise prepares for a separate major cinematic relaunch. Joseph Kosinski, who directed F1, is attached to direct a feature film reboot titled Miami Vice ‘85.

That upcoming project has already secured high-profile casting, with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler slated to star. The wide theatrical release of Miami Vice ‘85 is scheduled for May 19, 2028.
