ABU DHABI,United Arab Emirates – Disney aims to expand its global presence with a new theme park in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement released Wednesday. The entertainment giant is partnering with Miral, an Abu Dhabi-based developer, to bring the project to Yas Island.
The Abu Dhabi location will be the seventh Disney park worldwide, joining existing locations in the United States, china, Japan, and France. Plans for the park include hotels, restaurants, and retail locations, in addition to the traditional amusement park attractions.
Tourism potential Drives Expansion
During a conference call Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger cited the region’s growing tourism industry as a key factor in the decision to build in Abu Dhabi. “the region is sufficiently distant from the other parks so that we do not fear cannibalize existing sites,” Iger said. No opening date was announced.
Iger also pointed to the presence of cultural landmarks such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2017, and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, slated to open in early 2026, as evidence of the UAE’s commitment to tourism development.
Yas Island, located approximately 60 miles south of Dubai, already hosts several major attractions operated by Miral, including Warner Bros.World Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. Dubai is a major commercial and financial hub and home to one of the world’s busiest airports for international passengers.
Abu Dhabi aims to attract approximately 39 million tourists by 2030.
Miral to Fund Project
Under the agreement, Miral will fully fund the construction of the park. Disney will oversee the park’s design and provide operational expertise, receiving royalties and commissions in return. Iger stated the park will blend “disney’s authenticity and distinctive Emirati character.”
The announcement precedes a planned visit to the Middle East by former U.S.President Donald Trump, with a stop in the United Arab Emirates expected.
Iger said the project would ”mix Disney’s splendid stories and characters with the culture and taste of this country and this region,” adding that the new park would allow Disney to “reach the world population more effectively than before.”
When asked about the possibility of an eighth park, Iger said that no plans are currently under consideration.
