Last year, the drama ‘Moving’, which led to a rebound among Disney+ users, won the grand prize in the drama category at the Baeksang Arts Awards, beating competing OTT and TV content. In the film category, ‘Seoul Spring’, which sheds light on the December 12 military uprising, won the grand prize.

‘Move’ won the grand prize in the television category at the ’60th Baeksang Arts Awards’ held at COEX Hall D in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 7th. ‘Moving’, broadcast on Disney+, is a drama based on an original work by author Kang Full that deals with supernatural powers. This is the second major award in history for OTT content, following Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ in 2022. Last year, Disney Plus received attention as the number of subscribers increased significantly after the broadcast of ‘Sumud’. ‘Moving’ also received the Best Screenplay Award and the Best New Actor Award (Lee Jeong-ha).

Director Park In-je said, “(In the drama) the credits appear as Dong-seok flies into space. It contains the names of actors and staff from all over the world who took part from Part 1 to Part 20. “I would like to thank the people in the credits.”

The grand prize in the film category was given to ‘Seoul Spring,’ which deals with the December 12 military uprising. ‘Spring in Seoul’ also received the best picture award and the best acting award (Hwang Jung-min) in the film category. ‘Spring in Seoul’ surpassed 10 million viewers, which is unusual for a historical drama based on a true story, and also received great attention from the younger generation. As the victory of the rebels seemed stressful for the audience, it led to a ‘Heart Rate Challenge’ where people shared how high their heart rate rose while watching the film.

In their acceptance speeches, director Kim Seong-soo and actor Hwang Jeong-min expressed their gratitude to the audience for receiving public attention despite the uncomfortable subject matter. Director Kim Seong-su said, “Even though ‘Spring in Seoul’ was about a tantrum, people around me recommended it, so the movie became a hit. ” Actor Hwang Jung-min said, “It was a work that required courage from everyone (staff, production team, investors, etc.),” and added, “Thanks to the great courage of the audience who loved the this film in difficult times, I got a good reward.”

Director Kim Seong-su said at a press conference last year, “When I was a senior in high school, my house was in Hannam-dong, so when the Chief of Staff of the Army was kidnapped, I heard gunshots, but it wasn’t I have no idea what was going on.” She added, “When I found out the truth in my mid-30s, I was embarrassed and shocked. “It occurred to me that our country’s army could have fallen so easily,” he said. The director compared this film to ‘old homework’ and said he was making efforts to recreate it because he had ‘doubts’ about what happened that day.
