Djokovic Advances at French Open Despite Toe Blister
paris — novak Djokovic overcame a troublesome blister and a strong challenge from Corentin Moutet to secure his place in the third round of the French Open on Thursday. The world No. 1 battled through a medical timeout and a tense tiebreaker to win 6-3,6-2,7-6 (1).
Djokovic acknowledged the difficulty of the match. “With him, anything’s possible,” Djokovic said. “But I managed to find the right shots to stay in the match.”
This victory marks Djokovic’s 20th time reaching the third round at Roland Garros, a feat unmatched by Rafael Nadal. He is now two wins away from his 16th consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the tournament. Last year, Djokovic withdrew before the quarterfinals due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Djokovic, who holds a men’s-record 24 Grand slam titles, has won three of those titles in Paris.
Against Moutet, a left-handed Frenchman, Djokovic faced an early setback, getting broken in the first game. Though, he quickly regained control. The blister issue arose in the third set, leading to a medical timeout where his toe was treated and taped.
Despite the injury, Djokovic persevered. Moutet broke to lead 4-2, but Djokovic broke back immediately. Later, moutet held a set point at 6-5, but Djokovic ultimately prevailed in the tiebreaker.
djokovic, who recently secured his 100th career title at the Geneva Open, admitted his confidence was shaken before that victory. “Before last week’s tournament in Geneva, I didn’t feel confident in my game,” Djokovic said. “But it’s normal to feel that way, because I hadn’t won enough matches. I’m like any other player in that respect. I’ve had to work hard to win.”
What’s next
Djokovic will face another opponent in the third round as he continues his quest for another french Open title and to further solidify his role as a dominant force in men’s tennis. He hopes to avoid further injury setbacks as the tournament progresses.
