Dodgers-Padres: Dave Roberts Ejection & Heated Rivalry
Dodgers-Padres Rivalry Heats Up With Hit Batters and Ejection
Updated June 18, 2025
The Dodgers’ 8-6 victory over the Padres on Tuesday was marked by a fiery third inning, the latest episode in the escalating Dodgers-Padres rivalry. The game saw both Fernando Tatis Jr. and Shohei Ohtani hit by pitches, resulting in warnings issued to both dugouts and the ejection of Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
tatis was struck in the back by a Lou Trivino fastball, while Randy Vásquez hit Ohtani in the leg. Umpires issued warnings after Ohtani was hit, prompting Roberts’ ejection after he argued with third-base umpire Tripp Gibson.
Roberts believed the plunking of Ohtani was intentional. “Tatis, unintentional… At that point in time, Shohei comes up with a base open.Vásquez took one shot at him. And then hit him again. It’s very hard to miss that bad with a right-handed pitcher,” Roberts said. He also expressed frustration that Padres manager Mike Shildt received an description from the umpires that he did not.
Vásquez denied any intent, stating the Padres’ plan was to pitch Ohtani inside. “It wasn’t intentional at all,” he said through an interpreter. Shildt acknowledged Trivino had also hit Tatis a week prior, but said, “Things happen in baseball.”
Manny Machado downplayed any intentionality after Andy Pages was hit on Monday, saying, “They got way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody.” Pages, who homered twice in Tuesday’s game, felt he may have overreacted to being hit, suspecting the Padres thoght he was relaying signs.
In the seventh inning, Jose Iglesias was hit on the hand by a Matt Sauer fastball, but remained in the game after X-rays came back negative. Umpires did not believe there was intent on the play.
“There was no intent in him getting hit there, in our judgment,” hudson said.
Shildt said he understood the warnings, even though Iglesias was hit. “It didn’t feel good on our side,” Shildt said.”But candidly, I understood it.”
