The Supreme court, with ⁤a conservative majority, has granted Elon Musk’s Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) ⁤temporary access to personal data held by Social Security. This decision puts on ‍hold lower court rulings that had limited the agency’s access to this ⁢information.

In a 6-3 decision, the⁣ court sided with the Trump governance, which argues that DOGE, tasked with cutting public spending, is not subject ⁤to the Freedom of⁢ information act‍ (FOIA). The FOIA typically⁤ requires federal agencies to release documents upon request.

The ruling suspends lower court decisions that restricted DOGE’s access to sensitive Social⁤ Security administration (SSA) data, including medical records, bank statements, and salary information. The court did not provide a detailed clarification for its decision.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissented, arguing that the decision allows ‍DOGE “in emergency”⁢ to obtain “highly sensitive data” ⁢from millions of Americans before lower courts can determine the legality of such access. The Supreme Court ‍decision impacts government oversight and data access.

“Deliver the ⁣Highly Sensitive Data from the Doges of millions of American Americans”

The Trump administration contends that widespread fraud plagues ⁤the SSA, citing unsubstantiated claims of payments ⁣to deceased individuals.

What’s next

The case will now proceed in⁢ the lower courts, where the legality of DOGE’s access to Social Security data will be further examined. The temporary stay granted by the Supreme Court remains in effect until those proceedings conclude.
