Dogs & Children: Emotional & Physical Health Benefits
The Unseen Benefits: How Dogs enhance Our Lives, Especially for Children
On july 21st, celebrated as International Dog Day, the Affinity Animal and Health Foundation Chair at the Autonomous University of Barcelona highlights the profound benefits of canine companionship, especially for the emotional and physical well-being of children. This emphasis stems from a complete systematic review aimed at confirming dogs’ role as a source of social support for people.
Dogs: A Catalyst for Health and Happiness
The extensive review, presented at the Canine Science forum 2025 in Hamburg, analyzed over 52 international scientific studies from the past five years. Its findings unequivocally confirm what many families experience daily: living with a dog positively impacts our health. For children, this translates into increased quality physical activity through play and walks, greater engagement with the natural environment, and enhanced feelings of companionship and emotional security.
Combating Sedentary Lifestyles: Dogs and Outdoor Enjoyment
In Spain, a concerning trend shows that over 80 percent of children engage in outdoor play less than recommended. UNICEF data reveals that children today spend half the time playing outdoors compared to their parents.
A particularly insightful study from Australia, conducted during the pandemic, revealed that walking the dog was instrumental in encouraging families with children to venture outdoors, increase their physical activity, and enjoy nature. Beyond the physical, the presence of a dog provided much-needed company, joy, and emotional support, helping children navigate feelings of loneliness and uncertainty during periods of isolation.
“We already knew that dogs provide emotional benefits, but what has confirmed this systematic review is that, regardless of the social context – that is, moments of difficulty such as a pandemic or in the current situation – living with a dog provides significant emotional and physical benefits,” states Jaume Fatjó, director of the Affinity Animal and Health Foundation Chair. “And this, in the case of children, is especially critically important as it incentivizes physical activity outdoors and play.”
Elena García, a co-author of the review, adds, “The presence of a dog at home can be a powerful catalyst to break the isolation that increasingly affects the youngest.”
Beyond Childhood: Benefits for All Ages
The positive impact of animal companionship extends beyond children. The systematic review also shed light on studies demonstrating broader health advantages. A 2020 study from Brazil indicated that dog owners who walk their pets do so for pleasure considerably more often (28%) than non-dog owners (18%). Furthermore, dog owners are more likely to engage in more intense or moderate exercise during their free time (38% versus 22%). For older adults, walking a dog more than triples their chances of being physically active.
