Dollar Briefly Surpasses $1,000 Mark Amid Global Currency Shifts
The U.S. dollar surged past the $1,000 mark against the Chilean peso Thursday morning, driven by a global strengthening of the currency and a dip in copper prices. The dollar reached a high of $1,000.40 shortly after 9:30 a.m. before settling back to $996.75 by late morning, reflecting a gain of $5.47 according to Bloomberg data.
This movement follows the Federal Reserve’s declaration Wednesday of a slower pace of interest rate cuts in 2025. The news initially boosted the dollar globally, although many currencies, including the Chilean peso, were regaining ground Thursday in light trading ahead of the year-end holidays.
“The comments from the FOMC suggested that the Fed coudl maintain a restrictive stance in the medium term, which fueled the perception of greater strength for the dollar,” said Emanoelle santos, market analyst at XTB Latam.
The dollar index, which tracks the dollar against a basket of major currencies, edged down 0.02% Thursday after surging over 1% the previous day.Meanwhile, copper futures on the Comex market fell 1.32% to US$4.1 per pound. The Fed’s decision to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point, as was to be expected, was overshadowed by its revised projections for future rate cuts. Policymakers now anticipate reducing borrowing costs by only 50 basis points next year, a important reduction from the 100 basis points projected in September.
