Dolphins Coach Confirms Trade Offers for Calais Campbell Despite Team’s Struggles
Dolphins Keep Calais Campbell Amid Trade Talks
The Miami Dolphins had offers for defensive tackle Calais Campbell, confirmed coach Mike McDaniel. Despite the team’s struggling record, both McDaniel and Campbell opposed any trade.
The Dolphins nearly traded Campbell to the Baltimore Ravens for a fifth-round pick, according to NFL Network. McDaniel emphasized Campbell’s importance during discussions with general manager Chris Grier.
“It wasn’t Chris versus me,” McDaniel said. “We work together, and I may or may not have thrown an adult temper tantrum.”
McDaniel noted the balance between short-term needs and long-term goals. He stressed that Campbell’s role in the locker room is vital, especially since he recently turned 30.
The Dolphins were 2-6 at the trade deadline. Campbell, now 38, has been productive in his first season with the team. After receiving offers, the Dolphins consulted Campbell, who preferred to stay in Miami.
“There was some competition for that,” McDaniel said about the interest in Campbell.
Since the trade deadline, the Dolphins have won three games in a row. They are now competing for the AFC’s seventh playoff seed after a 34-15 victory against the New England Patriots.
Campbell is tied for the team lead with four sacks and leads in tackles for loss with nine. He ranks high among defensive linemen in run stop and pass rush win rates.
Teammate Zach Sieler praised Campbell’s leadership. “The energy, the attitude and the mindset he brings every week can’t be matched,” Sieler said. “That’s why he is who he is today and still performing at a high level after 17 years.”
