Updated⁣ May 29, 2025

The Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh ⁤Steelers have reportedly discussed a⁤ potential trade ‍involving ⁤tight end Jonnu Smith, according to sources. The Dolphins tight end,⁢ Jonnu ‍Smith, has expressed interest in adjusting his current contract.

Smith is⁣ due $4.8 million in 2025.He was absent from voluntary OTA practices this week. The Steelers’ interest stems from offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s history with Jonnu Smith, having coached him in Tennessee and later acquiring him in⁤ Atlanta.

Last season, Jonnu Smith set a Dolphins franchise record with 88 receptions and 884 receiving yards for a tight ⁤end, ⁣earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He led Miami in receptions⁢ and ranked fourth among all NFL tight ends in receiving yards.

A trade of Jonnu Smith would mean Miami potentially enters the ⁤season without several veteran ⁢leaders, including Calais Campbell, Terron Armstead, and Jalen Ramsey,⁤ whom the Dolphins ⁢are also considering trading.

Jonnu Smith played nearly 55% of Miami’s offensive snaps in 2024. The Dolphins’ current tight end roster⁢ includes ‍Julian Hill, primarily a blocking tight end, ⁢and free agent signee‍ Pharaoh‍ Brown, also known for his blocking.

Tanner Conner and Jalin Conyers complete Miami’s tight end options.

The Steelers already have Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington,‍ and‍ Connor Heyward at tight end. Thay also signed Donald Parham Jr.⁤ this offseason.

What’s next

It remains⁤ to be seen if miami and Pittsburgh⁢ can reach an agreement regarding Jonnu Smith. The Steelers carried four tight ends last season, but MyCole Pruitt, another player with ties to Arthur Smith, was not re-signed.
