Sony may be preparing to release an updated PlayStation Portal handheld, according to regulatory filings discovered at the Wi-Fi Alliance. The new hardware filings point toward potential revisions for the cloud-streaming device, which has remained unchanged since its launch.
Regulatory filings reveal new Sony hardware codes
Two previously unseen devices have surfaced in official documents at the Wi-Fi Alliance, categorized under gaming consoles and peripherals. The filings list model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105, as reported by Zuby_Tech on social media and detailed by Notebookcheck. These numbers stand apart from the existing cloud-streaming model, which carries the identifiers CFI-Y1000, CFI-Y1001, and CFI-Y1016.
Everyeye.it reported that the documentation points directly to Android 15 as the operating system for the new hardware variants, matching the OS used by the current Portal. That detail rules out the possibility that the devices are new standalone home consoles or revisions of the PlayStation 5. The Wi-Fi Alliance documents confirm that the hardware retains support for 1×1 Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, lacking any addition of a 6 GHz standard or extra antennas.

Hardware rumors point toward an OLED screen upgrade
Notebookcheck noted that insider Kepler_L2 claimed earlier in the year that a PlayStation Portal OLED refresh was in development, with a release tracking toward 2026. Everyeye.it noted that industry speculation has long suggested Sony might introduce a version of the portable device equipped with an OLED display alongside a base model hardware revision.
Notebookcheck added that an OLED panel would improve contrast, reduce motion smearing in fast-moving games, and potentially offer a higher refresh rate. Alternatively, Notebookcheck reported that the filings might indicate hardware modifications aimed at making battery replacement easier to comply with European Union right-to-repair regulations, similar to changes seen on other hardware like the Switch 2.
Sony broadens Portal features ahead of potential hardware revision
Notebookcheck noted that Sony has already deployed several software updates that expand how users play on the device. Owners no longer rely solely on Remote Play connecting back to an at-home PlayStation 5 console, as PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can now stream select titles directly from the cloud. Sony also added a 1080p High Quality mode to maximize the existing LCD screen.
Neither the Wi-Fi Alliance filings nor the regulatory documents confirm an exact release date for the newly certified hardware variants. Sony has not yet issued an official announcement regarding model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105.
