Los angeles Opera has tapped Domingo Hindoyan as its next Richard Seaver Music Director. The declaration follows speculation sparked by Hindoyan’s accomplished debut with the company last November in “Roméo et Juliette.” Music critic Mark Swed had noted the debut as a potential sign of things to come.
Hindoyan will take over from James Conlon, who steps down at the end of the 2026 season after joining the company in 2006. Conlon will than assume the newly created role of conductor laureate.
Hindoyan, 45, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “From the first rehearsal, I felt a strong connection to the extraordinary musicians, staff, and spirit of this company,” Hindoyan said. “It is a privilege to follow Maestro James Conlon, whose legacy has shaped L.A. Opera into what it is today — a dynamic and ambitious institution.”
LA Opera President and CEO Christopher Koelsch noted hindoyan’s talent and collaborative spirit. Koelsch said he was impressed by Hindoyan’s technique and musical ideas after seeing him at the Berlin State Opera in 2016. He also praised Hindoyan’s rapport with musicians and audiences.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Hindoyan began his musical journey as a violinist. Like Gustavo Dudamel, he is an alumnus of El Sistema, Venezuela’s renowned music education programme. He has also served as principal guest conductor for the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Conlon welcomed Hindoyan’s appointment. “Domingo is an artist of exceptional depth and imagination, and I know the company will welcome him warmly,” Conlon said.
Hindoyan’s five-year contract begins July 1, 2026, and extends through the 2031 season. He will maintain his position with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra concurrently.
