Eliminating Hepatitis B and C: A Step Towards Reducing Liver Cancer and Cirrhosis

According to Doctor Thongchai Keerati Hatthayakorn, Director General of the Department of Disease Control, a project aimed at promoting the elimination of hepatitis B and C has been implemented to combat the main causes of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Liver cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country, with approximately 22,000 new cases reported annually. Notably, 70% of liver cancer cases are attributed to hepatitis B and C infections.

Fortunately, high-quality antiviral medications for hepatitis C are now available, offering a complete cure. Additionally, a preventive vaccine for hepatitis B is included in the national vaccination plan for all Thai children. In 2024, the Department of Disease Control conducted a screening program, which revealed that 2.4 million people are infected with hepatitis, including over 60,000 individuals with hepatitis B and more than 20,000 with hepatitis C.

If left untreated, these individuals are at risk of developing liver cancer and cirrhosis. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 15,000 people will develop liver cancer and over 32,000 will suffer from cirrhosis, resulting in significant liver cancer treatment costs of up to 4,000 million baht in the future. To mitigate this risk, the Department of Disease Control encourages individuals born before 1992 or aged 32 years or older to undergo hepatitis B and C screening at a government hospital, free of charge, using only their ID card.
