‘doom: The Dark Ages’ Gameplay Shines Despite Confusing Story
Updated June 02, 2025
Don’t expect a coherent narrative from Doom: The Dark Ages. The game plunges players into a techno-medieval world where the Doom Slayer faces hordes of demons, seemingly without a clear reason. The story involves alien groups, human kingdoms, and a mysterious MacGuffin, but the details quickly become secondary to the action.
As the Slayer, players are far superior to any human allies, mowing down countless demons with ease. Whether jumping from great heights or wielding a chainsaw shield, the Slayer dominates the battlefield. The plot sends him to Hell and possibly an alien planet, but the focus remains on the visceral combat.
While the plot may be nonsensical, the gameplay of Doom: The Dark Ages excels. New features like parrying attacks and an emphasis on melee combat add depth to the demon-slaying experience. Upgrading the Slayer’s arsenal transforms him into an unstoppable force, capable of switching between weapons like the skullcrusher and accelerator with deadly efficiency. The BFC, or big fucking crossbow, ensures no demon is safe.
By the end, players will understand the fear the Doomguy inspires in demons. Having slaughtered countless foes, including their leader, the Slayer takes control of the Maykr ship, establishing a base for his ongoing war. He becomes the demons’ ultimate nightmare, driven by an insatiable need to eradicate them from the cosmos.
What’s next
Players can anticipate more intense demon-slaying action as the Doom Slayer continues his crusade, possibly exploring new worlds and facing even greater challenges in future installments.
