DPO Collaborates with Mahidol University to Develop Medical Products for Diabetic Patients

In a joint effort, the Dairy Farming Promotion Organization (DPO) has teamed up with Mahidol University to conduct research on medical food products for diabetic patients. The aim is to utilize 100% pure fresh cow’s milk, derived locally, as a replacement for imported raw materials. The project also seeks to alleviate the financial burden on patients and is slated for launch next year.

Mr. Somporn Srimuang, Director of Thailand’s DPO, highlighted the rising number of diabetes cases in the country, with projections indicating a significant increase in patients by 2023. To address this trend, DPO and Mahidol University, under the leadership of Assistant Professor Dr. Suphat Chaiyakul, are embarking on a research venture to develop medical food products using locally-sourced ingredients. This collaboration is supported by research funding from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

The use of cow’s milk and rice from Thai farmers as key components in the research project is expected to reduce production costs while enhancing the competitive edge of the domestic industrial sector. Moreover, it aims to promote agricultural development and the utilization of innovative food production technology to address healthcare challenges in the country.

Dr. Suphat Chaiyakul, leading the research team, emphasized the escalating demand for medical food products among diabetic patients in Thailand. The research focuses on developing cost-effective alternatives to imported products, addressing the financial strain on patients. With a planned launch in 2024, DPO aims to provide a viable solution for diabetic patients in the domestic and global markets.

The development of unique medical food products for diabetic patients utilizing locally-sourced cow’s milk and rice signifies a pioneering approach to addressing the needs of diabetic patients.
