Indonesia’s enterprising plan to relocate its capital city to Nusantara (IKN) in East kalimantan is facing growing scrutiny, especially regarding the readiness of essential infrastructure. Recent criticisms center on the limited capacity of the planned IKN airport and the potential logistical challenges of accommodating visitors from across the vast Indonesian archipelago.
IKN airport: A Capacity Bottleneck?
The IKN Airport, currently under development, is raising concerns about its ability to handle the anticipated influx of people once the capital officially moves. According to reports, the airport will initially only be able to accommodate a mere 600 passengers per day.
This severely restricted capacity has sparked debate about how IKN will function as a national capital and center of government. Critics question how the airport will manage the travel needs of government officials, civil servants, business travelers, and the general public.
furthermore, the logistical challenges extend beyond the airport itself. Regions like Sumatra, sulawesi, Bali, and east nusa tenggara (NTT) will all require adequate transportation and accommodation for those traveling to IKN. Without a comprehensive plan, these visitors could face significant difficulties.
Calls for Thorough Evaluation and Prioritization of Citizens
Bahri Salim, a member of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, has voiced strong concerns, urging the government to conduct a thorough evaluation of the infrastructure plans. He emphasized the need to avoid complicating the lives of Indonesian citizens with poorly planned policies.
“not to mention the regions of Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) which will head to IKN, where do you want to be accommodated and use what transportation? This must be studied deeply,” Salim stated.
He stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the Indonesian people throughout the IKN development process.Salim hopes the government will carefully consider all factors and make decisions that benefit citizens, rather than sacrificing their convenience for the sake of development.
