What Happened?

On September 14, 2025, the World Health Institution (WHO) confirmed a new outbreak of ebola virus disease in the Tshikapa health zone, Kasai Province, DRC WHO Statement. As of this report,investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and transmission chains.

This marks the 16th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC as 1976. Kasai Province previously experienced outbreaks in 2007 and 2008 WHO Statement. The WHO currently assesses the public health risk as high at the national level, moderate at the regional level, and low at the global level.

Understanding Ebola Virus Disease

Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness caused by a virus. It is a hemorrhagic fever, meaning it damages blood vessels, leading to bleeding. Symptoms typically include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, generalized pain, and malaise. In many cases, both internal and external bleeding occur CDC – Ebola.

The virus is transmitted to peopel through close contact with infected animals (like bats and primates) or with bodily fluids of infected people. There is no cure for Ebola, but supportive care – including rehydration with intravenous fluids and treatment of symptoms – can substantially improve survival rates. Vaccines have proven effective in controlling outbreaks.

Ebola Virus Types

There are several species of Ebola virus. The outbreak in the DRC has not yet been specifically typed, but understanding the species is crucial for effective response. The most well-known species include:

• Zaire ebolavirus: Associated with many large outbreaks in Africa, including the 2018-2020 outbreak in the DRC.
• Sudan ebolavirus: First identified in South Sudan in 1976.
• Bundibugyo ebolavirus: Associated with outbreaks in Uganda.
