[마이데일리 = 김성호 기자]Tottenham of the English Premier League did not take part in club competitions held in Europe this season. This is because he is 8th on the Premier League leaderboard for the 2022-23 season. At the time, they were one point behind Aston Villa and were excluded from the Champions League, which was awarded up to 4th place, and the Europa League, where up to 7th place could participate.

Tottenham qualified for the Champions League the following year thanks to their fourth place finish in the Premier League in the 2021–22 season. They were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to AC Milan with 1 draw and 1 loss. Of course, Son Heung-min also participated. Son Heung-min is currently 31 years old and will turn 32 at the end of the season, so there are not many opportunities to play in the Champions League yet. Maybe this season can be the last.

Tottenham are currently in 5th place in the Premier League. 4th place is Aston Villa, who were ranked just before last year. Aston Villa remain in 4th place with 67 points, ahead of Tottenham with 60 points. There is an optical illusion here. Tottenham played 33 games and Aston Villa played 35 games. Maybe it’s similar because Tottenham have played two games less. Currently fourth place in the Premier League is almost 100% likely to be occupied by Aston Villa and Tottenham.

In this situation, the British newspaper The Sun recently reported that although all the Premier League teams have been eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Champions League, there is a possibility that one more team will participate after beating the Germany. In other words, there may be an opportunity to participate in the Champions League up to 5th place.

The reason is because of Aston Villa. Villa lost 1-2 in the quarter-finals of the conference league held at Ligue 1 Lille’s home stadium early in the morning on the 19th of last month. Thanks to a 2-1 win in the first game, the total score for both teams was 3-3. In the end, both teams went into penalty kicks, with Aston Villa winning 4-3 and progressing to the semi-finals.

All British teams were eliminated from UEFA competition this season. Arsenal and Manchester City crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In the quarter-finals of the Europa League held on April 19, Liverpool won 1-0 against Atlanta, but could not overcome the 0-3 loss in the first leg.

West Ham, another team in the quarter-finals of the Premier League, also drew 1-1 with Bundesliga champions Leverkusen, but they also failed to close the gap from a 0-2 first-leg loss and withdrew.

Aston Villa progressed to the semi-finals of the Conference League on penalties, reviving the fifth-placed Premier League finishers’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Next season’s Champions League will increase from 32 teams to 36. The four teams are determined by the points awarded to each country’s league.

England are competing with Germany for a spot. At the moment, Dortmund and Bayern Munich are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and Leverkusen are in the semi-finals of the Europa League, so Germany has an absolute advantage. In particular, Dortmund won against PSG in the first leg. Due to Dortmund’s victory, Germany became a country with one more team participating in the Champions League.

In fact, England are at a disadvantage until the first match between Dortmund and PSG, but the media explain that a ‘minor miracle’ is needed. Until the quarter-finals, England’s points are 17.25 and Germany’s 17.928. Although Germany have an absolute advantage, there is a glimmer of hope if Villa win the conference league. The winning point increases to 18.25 points.

However, Tottenham could only have had a chance if the German team, who had three teams in the Champions League and Europa League, had lost all of their games, but the dream was dashed. Tottenham have no choice but to push Aston Villa aside and take fourth place in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s dream of joining the Champions League was shattered, and Chelsea and West Ham’s dreams of joining the Europa League were also shattered.
