Drinking 2 to 3 Cups of Coffee a Day Reduces Risk of Depression and Anxiety, Study Finds

Risk of Mental Health Disorders Linked to Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Drinking more than three alcoholic beverages per day has been associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders, according to a recent study. The research, conducted by Chinese scientists and published in Psychiatry Research, found that individuals who consumed 2 to 3 cups of coffee per day had a lower likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety.

The study, led by Professor Xu Qianjie from Hangzhou Normal University’s School of Public Health, builds upon previous research highlighting the potential health benefits of moderate coffee intake, such as a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, chronic liver disease, stroke, and cancer. To investigate whether there is a correlation between coffee consumption and mental health disorders, the researchers analyzed data from 146,566 participants in the United Kingdom who had provided information about their coffee-drinking habits and mental health between 2006 and 2010. In 2016, these individuals completed two widely used questionnaires aimed at diagnosing depression and anxiety.

The findings revealed that individuals who consumed three or fewer cups of coffee per day had a lower risk of depression and anxiety. Notably, those who drank 2 to 3 cups daily experienced the most significant benefits. Conversely, consuming three or more cups per day was associated with a higher risk of mental health disorders.

Among the participants, approximately 81% reported being regular coffee drinkers, with the majority consuming 2 to 3 cups daily. The average age of the study participants was 56, and around 57% were female. The researchers concluded that moderate coffee intake can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle as a means of preventing and managing depression and anxiety in the general population.

Depression and anxiety are prevalent mental health disorders worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 5% of American adults experience depression regularly, while 13% frequently feel anxious or tense. Furthermore, statistics from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveal that Koreans have the highest prevalence of depression globally, with a rate of 36.8%. In Korea, over 930,000 individuals suffer from depression, and more than 860,000 have anxiety disorders.

[사진=게티이미지뱅크]A study found that people who drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day are less likely to suffer from depression or anxiety disorders. This is what the health and medicine portal WebMD reported on the 15th (local time) based on a paper by Chinese researchers recently published in Psychiatry Research.

The research team, led by Professor Xu Qianjie from Hangzhou Normal University’s School of Public Health, focused on previous research showing that drinking moderate amounts of coffee has various health benefits, including reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. 2, chronic liver disease, stroke, and cancer. Based on this, the researchers determined whether there was a relationship between drinking coffee and depression or anxiety disorders.

Researchers analyzed data from 146,566 people in Britain who answered questions about their mental health and coffee drinking habits between 2006 and 2010. These participants answered two mental health questionnaires commonly used to diagnose anxiety and depression in 2016. The question asked how often symptoms related to depression or anxiety disorder occurred over the past two weeks.

The results of the analysis showed that people who drank three or fewer cups of coffee a day had a lower risk of depression and anxiety. The people who had the greatest effect were those who drank 2 to 3 cups a day. On the other hand, the risk of two mental health disorders increased for every three or more drinks a day.

Approximately 81% of participants were coffee drinkers, with the most commonly reported daily coffee intake being 2 to 3 cups. The average age of those who took part in the study was 56 years, and around 57% were women. “The results of this study support the recommendation that moderate coffee consumption can be part of a healthy lifestyle to prevent and manage depression and anxiety in the general population,” said the researchers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 5% of American adults experience depression on a regular basis, and about 13% feel anxious, tense, or anxious on a regular basis. The prevalence of depression among Koreans is 36.8%, the highest in the world, according to 2020 statistics from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). According to data from the Korea Health Insurance Evaluation Institute, as of 2021, the number of patients with depression in Korea is more than 930,000 and the number of patients with anxiety disorders is more than 860,000.
