Powering Up Inspections

ČEPS, the Czech republic’s sole Transmission System Operator, is leveraging drone technology to revolutionize powerline inspections. Partnering with Hepta Group, ČEPS conducted a pilot project in 2021, deploying drones to inspect a 14.8-kilometer section of 400kV/220kV transmission lines.

The drones captured high-resolution RGB, infrared, and LiDAR data, enabling the identification of over 850 defects across 118 kilometers of powerlines in just ten days. This innovative approach considerably outpaced conventional helicopter inspections in terms of speed and efficiency, providing ČEPS with detailed insights for improved maintenance planning and system reliability.

Non-Destructive Testing Takes Flight

VZÚ Plzeň,a Czech engineering company,is utilizing drones for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections in power generation. In 2023, the company inspected the cooling towers of a power plant, conducting 300 drone flights over 10 days to capture high-resolution imagery. This allowed for a complete assessment of the cooling towers’ structural integrity without the need for costly and time-consuming scaffolding.

Keeping roads Safe from Above

The Czech Republic is also exploring the use of drones for road safety. The Czech Technical University in Prague is developing a drone-based system for monitoring traffic flow and identifying potential hazards. The system uses artificial intelligence to analyze real-time drone footage, alerting authorities to accidents, congestion, or dangerous driving behavior.

Keeping Roads Safe from Above

datafromsky, a Czech company specializing in drone-based traffic analysis, is partnering with law enforcement to improve road safety. In 2022, the Central Bohemian Police used DataFromSky’s FLOW and TrafficSurvey technologies to analyze the driving behavior of over 100,000 vehicles. The results revealed that over 40% of drivers were following too closely.

In 2023, DataFromSky’s technology was deployed in a prevention project near the village of Vestec. Drivers were measured for safe following distance, and those driving dangerously were confronted with the results on the spot. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about drone-based traffic monitoring and encourage safer driving practices.”The evaluation shows that about 62% of all measured drivers maintained a two-second distance, which is recommended, but the rest did not,” said Petr Dvorak, Head of Aerial Intelligence at DataFromSky. “The experience is quite critically important,as in the Central Bohemian Region, there are over a hundred traffic accidents daily.”

The Czech Republic’s embrace of drone technology is transforming industries and enhancing lives. From inspecting critical infrastructure to ensuring safer roads, drones are taking flight and shaping a brighter future.
