DroneShield has announced a major leadership transition on April 8, 2026, with the departure of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Oleg Vornik and the retirement of Chairman Peter James.
Angus Bean, who previously served as the company’s chief product officer and chief technology officer, has been appointed as the new Managing Director and CEO, effective April 8, 2026. Hamish McLennan has been named as the independent chairman-elect.
The leadership changes led to an immediate reaction in the financial markets, with reports indicating that DroneShield shares slumped following the announcement.
Executive Transition and Succession
Oleg Vornik stepped down after 11 years in the role. Vornik joined the company as its first employee in 2015 and oversaw its growth from an initial public offering in 2016 with a market capitalization of $27 million to its entry into the ASX200 in September 2025, reaching a market capitalization of nearly $4 billion.

To ensure a stable handover, Vornik will remain with the company as an adviser for the next three months.
Peter James, who served as chairman for 10 years, will retire from the board and will not seek re-election at the upcoming annual general meeting scheduled for May 29, 2026.
The appointment of Angus Bean is described by the company as a natural step in its succession plan. Bean joined DroneShield in 2016 as the company’s sixth employee. He served as Chief Technology Officer from 2018 until October 2025, when he was appointed chief product officer.
Bean is credited with leading the development of the company’s core technologies and engineering strategy, as well as building the organization’s engineering team, which now exceeds 350 members.
Governance and Context
The leadership shuffle follows a period of governance scrutiny. In November 2025, Oleg Vornik and Peter James were involved in a controversy after selling all of their shares in the company.
Following an independent review of the company’s governance, DroneShield implemented a minimum shareholding policy in February 2026.
The new chairman-elect, Hamish McLennan, brings a background in executive leadership. McLennan currently serves as the chair of ARN Media and is a non-executive director of Light &. Wonder. His previous experience includes roles as the executive chair and CEO of Network Ten and as the executive vice president of the office of the chairman at News Corp.
Oleg Vornik
It has been an experience of a lifetime to serve as DroneShield’s CEO. I joined DroneShield as its first employee in 2015 and have led its growth from a market capitalisation of $27 million at its Initial Public Offering in 2016 to entering the ASX200 in September 2025 with a market capitalisation of nearly $4 billion
Vornik stated that leading a rapidly growing public company from its inception was incredibly demanding
and expressed his intention to take time off to reconnect with family and friends.
Angus Bean noted that he has led the technical team’s evolution from a small, ambitious team into a global leader
and highlighted the depth of talent within the company across the fields of aerospace, intelligence, defence, physics, and engineering.
