Jenia Resha Belt, 33, of Los Angeles, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of high school tennis star Braun Levi, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Belt also faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license, as announced by spokesperson Pamela Johnson on Tuesday.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 12:46 a.m. on May 4, 2025, when Belt allegedly struck Levi, who was walking near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and 2nd Street in Manhattan beach.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
Authorities arrested Belt at the scene. Court records indicate Belt had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit and was driving with a suspended license due to a prior DUI arrest as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Four passengers reportedly fled the area following the collision.
Belt was initially released in June but was apprehended again several months later. He is currently held on $2 million bail and is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, Johnson stated.
Legal Action and Foundation Established
Braun Levi’s parents filed a $200-million wrongful death lawsuit against Belt in November,according to the Los Angeles Times. The Levis had recently relocated to the South Bay after losing their home in the Palisades fire.
Braun Levi was a highly regarded tennis player at loyola High School and had committed to playing at the University of Virginia. Following his death, his family established the Live Like Braun Foundation in his memory.
Upcoming Press Conference
Los Angeles county district Attorney Nathan Hochman and Jennifer Levi, braun’s mother, are scheduled to discuss the charges at a news conference on Monday.
