Pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in the US District Court for the Central District of California, alleging the company used her image on television packaging without authorization. The lawsuit seeks at least $15 million in damages.

According to reporting from the BBC and ABC News, the complaint alleges that Samsung featured a copyrighted photograph of the singer’s face on the front of cardboard boxes for various television models sold at retail stores across the United States. The legal team for the 30-year-old singer claims that Samsung’s packaging was designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa’s hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung’s products.

The image at the center of the legal dispute was reportedly taken during Lipa’s performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits Music Festival. The lawsuit asserts that Lipa owns the copyright to the photograph and that Samsung utilized the image without a license or authority.

The complaint highlights that Samsung leveraged the singer’s public profile to market its hardware:

Recognizing Ms. Lipa’s notoriety and goodwill, Samsung used a copyrighted image of Ms. Lipa…without authority or license and prominently featured it on the front of cardboard boxes containing Samsung manufactured televisions for retail sale

Lipa first became aware of the unauthorized use of her image in June 2025. The filing notes that fans on social media began discussing the packaging, referring to the product as the Dua Lipa TV Box.

To support the claim that the image helped boost sales of the televisions, the lawsuit cites specific social media interactions. One Instagram user reportedly stated they would get that TV just because Dua is on it, while another user commented, If you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it.

The legal action includes several distinct claims against the electronics giant, including:

  • Copyright infringement
  • Trademark infringement
  • Misappropriation of Lipa’s likeness and image

According to the complaint, Samsung’s response to the situation has been dismissive and callous after the company allegedly ignored repeated demands to cease and desist from infringing on the singer’s rights.

Samsung has refused to comply with Ms. Lipa’s repeated demands that it cease and desist from infringing on her rights by the continued exploitation of the Infringing Products

The filing further states that the products in question remain on the market and continue to be sold throughout the country in what the legal team describes as ongoing acts of willful infringement.

Lipa’s attorneys emphasized that the singer is highly selective regarding the brands and partnerships she aligns with. To illustrate this, the court filing references her existing commercial partnerships with luxury and apparel brands, including Versace, Puma, and Yves Saint Laurent.
