Dubai Conducts Test Run of Driverless Taxis in Preparation for 2030 Implementation

Driverless Taxis to Hit the Streets of Dubai by 2030

Revolutionary self-driving technology takes center stage in Dubai’s transportation system

Dubai’s bustling streets are about to witness a groundbreaking shift in transportation as driverless taxis prepare to cruise their way through the city. In a test run set to pave the way for a driverless future, the renowned Jumeirah region 1 serves as the experimental zone, where cutting-edge self-driving technology developed by Cruise Auto Company collaborates with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.

With an ambitious eye on the future, Dubai RTA has struck a partnership agreement with Cruise to embrace automated vehicles that will revolutionize the taxi and e-hail services. The driverless taxi has already garnered success on closed tracks, propelling the collaboration to expand their trial runs onto bustling roads, albeit with a driver onboard.

Cruise Auto has been making waves in the United States with its groundbreaking self-driving taxi service since February 2022. Acknowledging the potential of this cutting-edge technology, senior officials from Dubai RTA embarked on an enlightening trip to San Francisco to experience the driverless marvel firsthand. Upon their return, the project was set in motion in Dubai, aligning with the visionary goal of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to have 25 percent of all journeys in the UAE conducted in driverless taxis by 2030.

A dedicated team appointed by RTA meticulously examines every aspect of safety pertaining to this revolutionary undertaking. Monitoring the performance of cruise taxis in Dubai’s demanding traffic conditions, this team remains vigilant throughout the trial period, ensuring all necessary precautions are taken. While a driver remains present in the test vehicle as a safety precaution, the successful completion of the road test will see RTA officially award handyman licenses to Cruise Auto, signifying a significant stride towards autonomous transportation in Dubai.

Dubai: Don’t be surprised if you don’t see a driver in the taxis that run through the city of Dubai. The test run of the driverless taxi, which will be implemented in the UAE by 2030, is taking place in the Jumeirah region 1. The technology-based self-driving Cruise Auto Company and Transport Authority Dubai Roads conducts the joint test run.

Dubai RTA has a partnership agreement with Cruise to operate self-driving vehicles to offer taxi and e-mail services in the future. The driverless taxi had already run a test on closed tracks. Following its success, the cruise company and Dubai RTA are conducting test runs on busy roads with the driver present.

Cruise Auto has been operating a driverless taxi service in the US since February 2022. Dubai RTA senior officials recently visited San Francisco to learn about the technology by riding a driverless taxi. After this, the project was implemented in Dubai. These efforts are in line with the ambition of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, that by 2030, 25 percent of journeys in the UAE will be in taxis without drivers.

Teams appointed by RTA will check the safety of the new task. The team will monitor the performance of cruise taxis in Dubai’s heavy traffic. At the moment there will be a driver in the test vehicle. This is because of the risk factor. RTA will officially hand over the handyman licenses to Cruise Auto once the road test run is successful.
