DUNDRUM, IRELAND – the ⁢sudden closure of Dundrum House Hotel and Leisure Center has left nearly 50 people jobless and⁣ dealt a significant blow to the local community, prompting accusations of a “short-sighted” government policy prioritizing International Protection Accomodation Services (IPAS) over local employment and tourism. While⁣ the hotel⁤ facilities have ceased operations, the IPAS centre on the grounds remains⁤ open,a fact described as “a bitter irony” by local representatives.

Job Losses and Community Devastation

The closure, enacted by the liquidator, came as a shock to staff who had been assured business was continuing as usual.Forty-eight employees were promptly locked out of their jobs, ⁢including those with years of service.

“Marion, her staff and all the 48 ‍employees in Dundrum were ⁢taken completely by surprise when they were ⁢informed…,” stated Sinn Féin Cllr Annmarie⁣ Ryan, referring to her cousin ⁢who runs the golf course as an independent contractor.”People are waking up this morning, locked out of their place of employment, without their jobs.”

The impact extends beyond the hotel staff. the closure affects 600 members of the golf club, leisure centre users, the new restaurant owners, and local suppliers.

“This is a ‍terrible day for ⁤Dundrum, for the staff who have lost their jobs, and⁤ for the community who have lost an ‍invaluable amenity,”⁤ added Deputy McGrath.

Concerns Over Government Policy and ⁤IPAS Funding

The situation has ignited criticism of government policy, with⁤ accusations that rural hotels and leisure facilities are being ‍repurposed for IPAS accommodation without‍ adequate consideration for the long-term consequences.

Deputy McGrath condemned the policy as “damaging,” arguing it fails to account for the impact on local employment, tourism, and social life. He called for‍ an urgent ‍review and raised serious⁣ questions about government spending on IPAS contracts.

“At ⁤a‍ time when Dundrum House is being shut down, we must ask ‍a very basic question, where is the money from ‍IPAS going?” he⁤ questioned. “Significant sums of taxpayer funding are being poured into these contracts, yet local jobs are being lost, facilities are being stripped from rural communities, ⁢and nothing is being reinvested back into the areas most affected.”

He demanded transparency, asking, “The government must come clean on how much is being spent, who is benefiting, and why⁤ local⁤ workers ⁢and families are paying⁢ the price.”

Planning Concerns and ⁣Calls for Intervention

Further fueling the controversy is the revelation ⁣that the Section 5 planning exemption granted for the use of Dundrum⁢ House as an IPAS Centre should not have been approved. ⁣

Deputy McGrath‍ is urging the Minister for Justice to intervene,⁤ act on previous findings, and terminate the “flawed⁣ arrangement” that ⁢has deprived the community of a vital facility.

Future of Dundrum House‍ Uncertain

Both Deputy McGrath ⁣and Cllr ryan emphasized the need for a responsible ⁣approach to the ⁤future of the property.

“I will continue to press the government and the liquidator to take responsibility and ensure that Dundrum House is not abandoned ⁢to decline, but given a future that serves⁢ the community, not undermines ⁣it,” ‍Deputy McGrath stated.

Cllr⁣ Ryan ‍highlighted the liquidator’s duty of care⁣ to⁢ employees, ensuring their redundancy rights are met, and to maintain the golf course, preventing it from falling into⁣ disrepair. “It’s a terrible day for the ⁣staff of Dundrum House, and the wider community,” she⁤ concluded.
