Police Warning Regarding Home Visit Scams
Table of Contents
The Dutch police are advising citizens to instantly contact emergency services by dialing 112 if they suspect individuals attempting to gain access to their homes under false pretenses. This warning stems from a pattern of scams involving deceptive individuals who target residents with fabricated stories to steal money and valuables.
Types of Scams and Tactics
scammers often present themselves as trustworthy figures, initiating contact through phone calls, door-to-door visits, or direct approaches in public spaces. The “babbeltruc” (chat trick) is a common method, where perpetrators use convincing narratives to gain a victimS trust and ultimately access their homes and possessions. Thes narratives can range from offering assistance with home repairs to claiming to be conducting official surveys.
According to the Fraudehelpdesk (Fraud Help Desk), a common tactic involves claiming to be from a utility company needing to check meters, or posing as a representative from a social service organization offering assistance. Once inside, they steal money, jewelry, or other valuable items.
Reporting and Prevention
The police emphasize that legitimate service providers or officials will never request immediate payment or access to personal belongings. If someone arrives unexpectedly at your door claiming to be an official, always verify their identity independently by contacting the organization they claim to represent. Dialing 112 is the recommended course of action when encountering a suspicious individual attempting to enter your home.
As of January 31, 2026, there have been no breaking news reports indicating a meaningful shift in the prevalence or tactics of these scams compared to reports from previous years, where the police consistently warn against these types of fraud.
