Boston—New research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting reveals significant racial disparities in the diagnosis of early-onset colorectal cancer. Jessica Paulus, ScD, a cancer epidemiologist and senior director at Ontada, presented findings based on data from 105,000 patients.
The study found that Black, Hispanic, and Latino individuals under 50 are overrepresented among those diagnosed with colorectal cancer. These patients are also more likely to be diagnosed at stages 3 and 4,Paulus said.
Paulus noted that current screening guidelines, which start at age 45, do not cover more than half of early-onset patients, especially those under 44. The research underscores the need for improved screening strategies.
“Earlier detection is vital for all patients,” Paulus said. She emphasized that advanced stage at diagnosis has dire consequences, and there is a disparity for early-onset cases. Other research indicates a longer diagnostic delay for younger patients.
